Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Makes Virtual First Court Appearance
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the movie "Rust", charged with manslaughter, has her first day in court.
Feb.24, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed made her first in court appearance via video conference for manslaughter charges for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and shooting of director Joel Souza on the “Rust” movie set on Oct. 21 2021.
Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyer Jason Bowles and Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies both agreed on imposing the “least restrictive” conditions for her release. There was no bail set for Gutierrez-Reed.
The only issue that was fought on was for Gutierrez-Reed to keep a gun. Alec Baldwin, a co-defendant in the shooting, has been prohibited from owning firearms for his conditions of release. Carmack-Altwies argued that due to the nature of her charges involving firearms Gutierrez-Reed should be prohibited as well from keeping firearms.
Bowles argued that Gutierrez-Reed be allowed to keep one firearm. Bowles stated that he had documented proof that since the shooting Gutierrez-Reed had been receiving death threats and already had a stalker. Because of that Bowles said Gutierrez-Reed did not feel safe unprotected.
Carmack-Altwies argued that if Gutierrez-Reed didn’t feel safe she had other options, “she could get a baseball bat.”
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer sided with Bowles’ request and allowed Gutierrez-Reed to keep a firearm for self protection.
Another issue discussed at the hearing was to plan to go over Baldwin’s motion to have special counsel Andrea Reeb, a state legislature member, thrown out. Baldwin’s team argues in motions filed that Reeb’s position as a state legislature disqualifies her from holding the responsibilities of another branch of government power.
No date was set at the hearing but all the parties agreed to having a hearing scheduled in the near future.
David Halls, another co-defendant, will be having a plea conference March 8, in regards to his plea deal. Halls is pleading to a lesser reckless weapon charge and avoiding being charged as well with manslaughter.
